The new all-day school for 825 children aged six to fourteen is to be built on a plot of land previously used mainly for gardening and situated at the entrance to the urban development area Erzherzog-Karl-Straße-Süd. Along Langobardenstraße, a clear edge was desired with buildings that should be as closed-shaped and space-creating as possible, while at the same time ensuring permeability into the interior of the quarter. The building's structure reacts to its location, i.e. it is flanked by the street and underground and closes off the urban edge, while at the same time it forms a generous forecourt offering a safe access as well as a recreation area. By giving the building structure a flexed shape with two wings, a common centre is created for the functional units both of the primary school and new middle school which are located separately in the two wings of the building. The main entrance on the forecourt and a second school entrance on the footpath and cycle path along the underground to the north both lead to a connecting assembly hall that opens up to the school garden and serves as a "hub" for the communal and semi-public spaces located on the ground floor, such as the dining rooms, the library and a multi-purpose hall. Two central staircases provide access to the four upper floors, in each of which, grouped in two clusters, the educational rooms are arranged around multifunctional areas. These lead to terraces that are large enough to be used as open-air classes. The walls between the educational rooms and the multifunctional areas, which can be furnished and used in a variety of ways, are designed in different colours and with transparent and opaque segments, shelves, and retreatment niches.  In this way, visual references and identification with one's own educational space, i.e. the classroom, are created. The roof garden above the gym tract is connected to the school garden at ground level by way of a staircase.

Extract from the jury's report: "The building structure is a successful answer to the urban planning challenge of the site being flanked to the north by the subway and to the south by the tram line. Due to the building's multiple bends, the project reacts appropriately to the intersection of Langobardenstraße/Kapellenweg on the one hand, and on the other hand creates an attractive forecourt on Langobardenstraße providing this address with a clear and distinctive feature.  The shape of the building reacts both to the current and to a future development of the quarter. ... The flexed shape of the building creates a common centre, which connects the two functional units New Middle School and Primary School located in the two wings. ... clusters and naturally illuminated multifunctional areas in combination with the terraces in front of the building allow for a high-quality atmosphere for the building's users and visitors."
