Study 2016
Client: Municipality of Breitenfurt
The study examines the feasibility of building affordable residential units at the foot of a wooded hill. The timber construction not only responds to the atmosphere of the site, but also sets an example for innovative, future-oriented and sustainable urban development.
In order to avoid the construction of an expensive underground car park, the required parking spaces for cars and bicycles will be accommodated at ground level with minimal intervention in the terrain. Above this, along Doktor-Kasimir-Graff-Gasse, the block-shaped building, clearly structured by its access cores, accommodates a total of 29 apartments in four different typologies, laid out within a modular timber construction grid. The two full storeys are accessed via a central corridor that widens out into loggias. In combination with the common room and the shaded community terraces located in front of the coronating staggered top storey, this access corridor forms an essential part of the building's structure, which is designed to provide a variety of open spaces and to strengthen the house community.
During a second phase of construction, a second building section will be constructed, consisting of three individual buildings that will be accessed from a central staircase, thus completing the ensemble. The development encloses a green open space for common use, which, in combination with the adjacent wooded hill, contributes to the identity of the "Forest Hill" residential complex.
