School building Prücklmayrgasse
close

In order to meet the shortage of space in schools and child-care centres in a cost-effective and quick manner, the erection of so-called mobile classrooms made of metal containers has become more and more popular. However, their disadvantages in terms of building physics and room climate, as well as the lack of creative possibilities given in the interior design, are unacceptable not only for the kids but also for the teachers and child carers.

Commissioned by the Vienna City Magistrate Department No 19 the Schluder Architektur team thus developed a wooden alternative to this system, which is economically compatible, ecologically sustainable and of better architectural quality. The first prototype was realised in the course of the construction of an add-on to the primary school at Prückelmayrgasse in the 23rd district of Vienna. Four new classrooms could be housed in the two-storey add-on that is directly connected to the main building and accessibly designed for handicapped people. All the wall and ceiling elements were prefabricated in the factory and delivered to the construction site already including insulation, windows and empty conduits/tubing for later cabling.
